Nightclub & Bar Review
Right beside the Donau (Danube Canal) sits one of the best clubs in the continent - Flex - a bona fide classic that has been bringing in massive crowds for over a decade now. This place is right up there with the best clubs in Europe, and the mix of quality music and location make it a must see on a trip to Austria’s capital.
First - the location is great, and it’s always beautiful to start off an evening at a nearby bar on the Canal (or even with some friends and a few beers), soaking up the sunset and just chilling before heading here when it gets dark. It’s easy to get to and if you have trouble finding it 99% of the locals can point you there anyway.
The interior is lovingly rough around the edges, with black walls and sparse furnishings, and in the main hall pipes and steel bars jut out from the ceiling. Flex cafe next door looks like a steampunk version of a 1950's milkbar, with chrome highlights and low-slung couches. A trip to the bathroom will confirm that this place is just straight-up cool - there are ashtrays and cupholders next to the cisterns and perspex walls reveal mountains of candy. Yeah, you read that right. Candy. In the walls.
Flex brings in some of the best music from around the world - everything from blistering Indie Rock through to bass-heavy Dubstep and D’n’B - and it caters to music lovers like no other club in Vienna. The bands / groups that come here are also spoiled by the stage set-up and the soundsystem - it’s one of the best systems in the city and delivers good quality, but be warned - this thing gets LOUD - they even provide earplugs at the door so you might want to cop a pair if you fancy talking to your grandkids down the track.
Because of the awesome location, even during big nights you’ll often find people spending as much time outside on the terrace as they do inside, so the vibe at Flex is always upbeat - there’s always something happening and people to chat to. Another thing that puts Flex right up at the top of Vienna’s club scene is the fact that it’s open every night of the week, so if you’re looking to kick it off on a Monday or Tuesday then you know that they’ll have you covered one way or another, with Dub Club (Dubstep) and Crazy (Minimal) starting up from 10pm on both nights till late (closing is 4am at the moment, hopefully 6am soon). Other regular nights include Beat It (D’n’B) and London Calling (Rock), and in between the regular rotations you can always check the guide to see which internationals they’re bringing in.
There’s no dress code, the entry is always cheap and the drinks are cold if not fancy. There is no question that Flex is a must-visit. Put it on the list...
