Lit Lounge is a messy, scruffy, sticky alt-Rock venue / art gallery in the East Village that's so cool it hurts [Read the Nightclub & Bar Review]

Nightclub & Bar Review

Lit Lounge is a dive bar in the nicest sense of the word - it’s dingy, dim and cool. Scenesters, hipsters, art-lovers, scruffy-looking types and their low-fringe / high-waist gf’s invade this underground lair that’s half club / half indie-art studio and 100% trashy goodness.

The interior is split between an upstairs bar and lounge, an art studio (Fuse Gallery) and downstairs where you'll find a space that's all low-ceilings, exposed pipes, lo-fi lighting and op-shop fit-outs. Because of the tight relationship between music and art here, the closest reference points would be Oxford Art Factory in Sydney, Fluc in Vienna and Village Underground in London. The focus isn't on the models and bottles / VIP scene that other clubs thrive on, and it's great to visit a place that has that classic East Village vibe - a love of the creative spirit; a space where self-expression is given more room to breathe.

The music and the crowd at Lit Lounge are what really make this place interesting, and all manner of budding directors, artists, musicians and photographers come out of the woodwork to party hard in the club while long-haired DJs wipe the sweat from their serial killer moustaches and bang out off-kilter club tracks that veer from modern Electro-Clash and Dirty House through to 80’s New Wave and ultra-distorted Navel-Gazing Rock. Live bands also get a look-in depending on the night, and this is the kind of place where you can grab a cheap beer, chill on a lounge downstairs and listen out for the next big thing. Not that it's all up-and-comers mind you - the list of artists / bands that have played here over the years is f*cking amazing, and you have to respect it for that alone.

The door at Lit Lounge is actually pretty tight for a place that prides itself on being messy, and depending on the mood the bouncer is in you may or may not have an easy time making it through the front door. Before you do that - make sure not to wear your best white sneakers - they are guaranteed to be totally black and a bit sticky by the end of the night. If you like your nights out a little grungy, love the new art scene and want to hang with the dirty, pretty young things - Lit Lounge has got what you need.
