Nightclub & Bar Review
The Black Pearl bar in Melbourne is sophisticated, stylish, and an absolute riot on the weekends. It draws in boatloads of locals on Friday and Saturday nights, and the Brunswick Street massive ensure that the venue really buzzes late into the night. If you're after quality cocktails and an upbeat vibe, this is the place - you know you're in for a treat when you order a cocktail and they ask you which type of liquor you prefer!
A recent upgrade has split the main room into two, and the interior is warm and welcoming, with dark chocolate wood panels running along the edge of the main bar, and the plush velour lounges and satin cushions are very inviting - if you can nab one early.
The Black Pearl is trendy but doesn’t overdo it, and the vibe is more of a raucous party mood than a place for the posers, which is a nice change. It's a great balance for a place that is considered to be one of the best bars in the world. The drinks are absolutely top-notch, with everything from immaculate Whiskey Sour through to a new take on the classic Bloody Mary (made with Tequila instead of Vodka), and the bar staff are well-trained and enthusiastic about their cocktails, with a variety of classics served in flawless crystal tumblers.
There’s a lounge area upstairs (known as The Attic) that’s a little less full-on than the main bar, with subdued lighting and more couches for lounging. It really is a different atmosphere, to the point that the staff upstairs wear different uniforms to the ones downstairs at the main bar.
You can be sure of one thing here - unless you come during the middle of the week you’re probably down to have a wild time, and the Black Pearl does that better than most. The crowd is mixed and upbeat, and when the music starts pumping on the weekend the energy level jumps up to 11 - be prepared to twist and shout on your way to the bar. The Black Pearl in Melbourne is shoulder-to-shoulder with Polly as the best bars in Melbourne.
