Canvas in Amsterdam offers awesome views and an amazing vibe - check out one of the best kept secrets in the city [Read the Nightclub & Bar Review]
Nightclub & Bar Review
A bit further out from most other nightlife options in Amsterdam – upon arrival you will soon realise that the search for the Netherland's best kept secret was most definitely a worthwhile journey. Upon entrance a seemingly stock-standard corporate building foyer ushers you into an elevator to reach the club, bumping up seven stories past bohemian residences and studios of artists and musicians, the creativity and style extends its influence all the way to the top. The elevator doors pull open to an indie kids haven of edgy décor, dress and sound.
Canvas Bar & Lounge manages to balance both the classy socialites and alternatives in a hybrid of indie bar, chic cocktail lounge and groovy club. The lovechild of all of these scenes fills a void in the European club scene and offers a pumping refuge for people from all different crowds.
Passing through a large, yet free-moving dance floor, the back of the club offers a chilled retreat of beer-hall style tables, vintage leather couches and stools that you can swivel around on to the funky disco music (if you have already worn through your dancing shoes). Rimmed along the side by bars, house party-style plastic beer cups clash head-on with a well-shaken and delicious cocktail menu – prices are reasonable and the bar staff will finish the night being your best friends, which is always a refreshing change.
The main unifying feature of Canvas that holds together its different crowds, scenes and styles is the unwavering music policy – pushing out Disco, Funk and Soul breaks. The DJs have everyone inside popping on a soulful and discolicious journey through the eras - from James Brown jams to a Pet Shop Boy’s blast from the past and rounding it off with some current Duck Sauce funk. The musical styling’s and selections don’t slow too much throughout the night keeping all the dancefloor turkeys in full jive.
Canvas spreads out a scenster and hipster crowd in this uber-cool venue – however, anyone is welcome for a night of cocktails and next morning's regrettable dance-floor moves; age is no concern here although the general range is early-to-late twenties. The style, crowd, music and bar at Canvas all really shine together as a well-rounded and avant-garde nightclub amalgamation – however, be careful as the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ is very easy to catch here; in a memorable night out of Harlem meets Bauhaus.
